The Bay Area Orienteering Club is hosting the 30th annual Scout-O at Briones Regional Park! This cross-country map and compass adventure challenges Scouts to put their navigation and outdoor skills to the test while exploring beautiful terrain. It’s a great opportunity to build teamwork, practice orienteering, and have some fun outdoors. A perfect activity for Scouts of all experience levels.
Itinerary
- Meet at the event location at 9am
- Teams will begin at staggered times. Exact start times will be determined upon arrival
- Each team will complete a 3.5 km (2.2 mi) course before finishing
- Teams are organized as shown in the shared list
Although this is a competition, our main focus is on practicing skills, teamwork, and enjoying the orienteering experience. Orienteering offers both a mental and physical challenge, and we hope everyone has a fun and rewarding time outdoors!
What to bring
- Lunch and water
- Strong trail shoes
- Long pants (the park has stickers!)
- Pen or pencil
- Watch
- Compass
- Hat and or sunscreen (if it’s hot)
- Rain gear (if it’s rainy)
Course Details
- Course 1 is easiest and shortest, on trails, and is for beginners. No orienteering experience is needed. Teams of 2 to 6, plus an adult advisor.
- Course 2 is longer, controls are off-trail, but visible from the trail. Some orienteering experience is advisable. Teams of 2.
- Course 3 is between Courses 2 and 4 in navigational difficulty and length. Teams of 2.
- Course 4 is a typical Orienteering USA Orange course, suitable for intermediate orienteers with substantial prior orienteering experience. Controls and optimal route choices are off-trail, and the course is longer. Compete alone. Teams of 2 permitted if mandated by scouters.
