Exploring the Outdoors
Nothing highlights the fun and excitement of Scouting like being in the outdoors. Whether it’s day camp, summer camp, or just hanging out with friends, getting outside is what kids love to do! Our troop is always on the move – we plan at least one hike or camping trip every month, and no one does the outdoors better than the BSA.

Outdoor Ethics
Adventure in nature comes with responsibility. That’s why our Scouts learn about Outdoor Ethics, the umbrella term for how a Scout relates to the outdoors.
The Outdoor Code is Scouting’s aspirational statement of Outdoor Ethics.
The Outdoor Ethics Guide Handbook helps units build a culture of responsible outdoor choices. It identifies the responsibilities of the outdoor ethics guide, offers ideas and resources, and shows leaders how to support Scouts in the role.

To support the Outdoor Code with proven principles and skills, Scouting has incorporated Leave No Trace, for non-motorized outdoor activities, and Tread Lightly!, for motorized activities and shooting sports.
Scouting has embraced the Leave No Trace program as a core of our Outdoor Ethics.
The Seven Principles
Plan Ahead and Prepare
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Dispose of Waste Properly
Leave What You Find
Minimize Campfire Impacts

Be Considerate of Other Visitors

Outdoor Ethics Awards
The Outdoor Ethics Awards recognize Scouts who show their commitment to caring for the environment. These awards encourage Scouts to learn, teach, and live by the principles of outdoor stewardship – so every adventure leaves the outdoors better than they found it. See how to earn these awards.
