Carson Pass Snowshoe Camp

Saturday, Apr 25 – Sunday, Feb 26, 2026

Leave SF around 4am on Saturday

Get ready for a true cold-weather adventure at Carson Pass! We’ll snowshoe through scenic alpine terrain to Lake Winnemucca, where we’ll set up camp and spend the night surrounded by snowy peaks. This is a very easy trail, and we won’t rush, making it a great option for Scouts who have never snowshoed before.

Itinerary

  • Drive (~3-4hrs depending on traffic) up on Friday night or Saturday morning
  • Since the pass remains open all winter, we’ll start from the trailhead parking lot and hike approximately 3.5 miles into Round Top Lake
  • The next day, we’ll snowshoe back to the trailhead, taking in more of the beautiful backcountry views along the way

What to Bring

  • Snowshoes
  • Snow boots suitable for hiking (rent/borrow if you don’t have your own)
  • Winter-rated sleeping bag (rated to 30°F or lower minimum)
  • Two sleeping pads for insulation from the snow (Recommended: one foam pad + one inflatable pad.Two foam pads also work)
  • Warm layered clothing suitable for winter conditions (Most Scouts will already have what they need)

This trip will give Scouts a new adventure in a different environment. It will also count as one of the high-elevation camping trips leading up to the PCT backpacking trip.
